I think this is a great idea. Aligned to the three main tasks of developing Wikimedia projects, talking to various Wikimedians (and other conference attendees), and facilitating the wider participation of non-attendees - we would be improving substantially on past efforts (which have been cool - don't get me wrong). To my eyes, the point about bringing "listeners" around the world into the discussion is especially nice - and it's a bit like radio. This was something we are hoping to do in Wikiversity, possibly through Asterisk (see v:Wiki Campus Radio - even though name probably needs to be changed) - so any advance on how to do this, and how it works would be most welcome. (Trials could be done beforehand of course.) Maybe we could just have a larger "Wikimania Radio" project running alongside where people can play music as well as all the other cool interactive stuff that's proposed? Love the Wikisource idea. As to the "tutorials" section - what about techie stuff like coding Mediawiki as well as the "introduction to wiki". I'd love to align this around learning, so Wikiversity should be able to wrap/work around this in some way - possibly as backup activities while pointing to activities in Wikipedia/Wikibooks etc. Interesting to see how this develops... :-) Cormaggio is learning 10:26, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Community building via multimedia edit
Long ago, (when I was Quinobi) a handful of us started a Community Builders Taskforce in hopes of understanding Community itself, from personal to global contexts, including the Wikipedia experience. Now that Wikiversity is online, we've essentially "moved over there" realizing that all Wikimedia projects collectively comprise what we can think of as a metacommunity. Like most people would acknowlege, face-to-face aspects of community are the most powerful, but the logistics are a challenge. Multimedia beyond text, therefore should indeed be a good focus for all members of the Wikimedia metacommunity. For this reason, the Internet Audio and Video Division of the School of Media Studies has been created at Wikiversity. I'm hoping (as I'm sure Cormac does) that this school and division can become a "beehive" as Wikimania approaches.
I am particularly interested in the idea of VoIP integrated with such things as Internet Radio. (I started the above mentioned "Wikio" project.) In my opinion, Wikimedia projects should favor open source vehicles for this type of technology whenever possible. Asterisk (PBX) therefore seems to me the "best" choice. I put a link to the VoIP taskforce page at Wikiversity on the project page to direct potential beta testers there and I shall place a reciprocal link to here. It is entirely feasible, as I see it, to use the Wikiversity:Sandbox Server as an Asterisk private branch exchange hub in conjunction with Icecast audio streaming to facilitate the activities described here. Additionally, we can use #wikimania and #wikiversity on Freenode (IRC is primative but useful) to discuss, coordinate and test all this in realtime.
