Wikipedia talk:WikiProject community rehabilitation/Idea/Patrol the New Pages

I've always wondered with new editors whether it's best to just say hi or to leave a welcome template. Many are not, in fact, new users. And I'm not sure how the templates really go over. They can seem sort of massive and intimidating I think. What do other people think? I have started to move away from the big welcomes and started to write short notes offering assistance if needed. I will admit that ~95% of the time either one appears to fall on deaf ears, but by that math you could be planting the seeds for five new productive editors.
