Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Critical source examination

Latest comment: 9 years ago by Harej in topic WikiProject X is live!

This could be a really great project! (Just 'heard' about it on Wikiversity.) I also just added it to another wikiproject Wikipedia:WikiProject Fact and Reference Check - seems like both projects should work together to some degree. Cormaggio is learning 12:10, 21 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Cormac,
Yes, WikiProject Fact and Reference Check is some kind of sisterproject. Though, the aims of both projects seem to be a bit different. WikiProject Fact and Reference Check seems to focus predominantly of the appearance of an article with an abundance of sources. WikiProject critical source examination doesn't necessarily deal with the appearence of an article, but more on reliable contents based on relevant sources. So, many sources doesn't necessarily be good for an article.
I don't agree with the notion 'emphasis on learning'. WikiProject critical source examination will focus on creating good articles. Learning can be done during the process of the creation, but it isn't an aim of the project. The aim could be to provide articles where readers can learn something from, not the writers. Do you agree if i remove that part of the introduction of this WikiProject on wikiProject Fact and Reference Check?Daanschr (talk) 13:04, 21 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm surprised you don't see learning as an aim of the project. If it is "intended to promote a debate on sources", then I would say that it definitely involves an element of sharing ideas and perspectives. Furthermore, this is backed up by an initiative on Wikiversity. Why do you not see learning as a major focus? (However, these are just my observations - of course you can facilitate this project however you like!) Cormaggio is learning 18:05, 21 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
My main concern is that administrators here on Wikipedia are very strict in keeping it an encyclopedia. The historical atlas of user Electionworld has been condemned to Commons for instance. It is not for nothing that other projects like Wikiversity have been established for other purposes.
My intention with WikiProject critical source examination is to help improve articles on Wikipedia. The reading groups on wikiversity can cooperate with this WikiProject by promoting learning while reading the sources dedicated to a certain subject like Thucydides. A benefit for Wikiversity is to gain new participants, because Wikipedia is more well known than Wikiversity. Still, WikiProject critical source examination needs to be purely about helping out the general encyclopedia in order to avoid the risk of being purged.
We are both active on both Wikipedia and Wikiversity. In the future it could occur that reading groups on Wikiversity will not try to improve articles on Wikipedia or that participants of WikiProject critical source examination will not be active on a reading group of Wikiversity.Daanschr (talk) 20:23, 21 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal edit

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject X is live! edit

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.
