Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Create an Interactive Map of All Recorded Human History

This is a really cool idea. However, without strong organization and commitment, it will quickly fail. If this idea gains popularity though, it would be a wonderful tool. This goes a little beyond the levels of Wikipedia though. This is like a proposal for an WikiHistory website. I'm very interested though. Tbeasley0504 (talk) 02:10, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

This is a great idea but it's also VERY ambitious. I think each of your phases should be further subdivided, or maybe just start with phase one and subdivide that. IMHO phase one should be taking some of the historical data that is already in Wikipedia and organizing it in a way that in can be accessed through a map instead of a webpage. I'm not sure if Wikipedia is the right place to do that. As you are already aware, the borders of countries change over time. However, I think for phase one you should simply tag each event with a date and which country/countries it applies to, and then give the user a map and a way to set a date range. When they click on a country they get a list of links to relevant articles in Wikipedia.

You might want to pick a war. Really be narrow and focused. When did each country enter and leave the war? What were each countries' grievances, and what was the final result? I encourage you to think of your project as a way to view data that's already on Wikipedia and explicitly exclude writing articles from the scope of your work.
