Script of the cities named in this page

edit

Fabian (within the Workshop Wiki SUPSI - Chapter 2) made a script which takes the names from this page and checks on Wikidata if the city is there and how many of the parameters selected are filled in. It then provides a simple visualization of the cities according to how many of the selected parameters are documented. the parameters were:

  • image P18
  • country P17
  • coordinate of location P625
  • head of government P6
  • population P1082
  • area P2046
  • flag image P41
  • located in time zone P421
  • official website P856

Focus on complementing Wikidata or English Wikipedia?

edit

Hi Iolanda, would you suggest completing the infoboxes on English Wikipedia first, and then propagating the data to Wikidata, or rather the other way round, completing the Wikidata items and working towards infoboxes that pull the data directly from Wikidata? - I guess the second approach would be more efficient and could be largely automatized once the relevant data sources have been located, provided that there is community support to actually wikidatafy the infoboxes - maybe this is more easily done on smaller Wikipedias (I'm thinking of all the African languages)... --Beat Estermann (talk) 05:48, 16 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikidata first is the best option; i agree. With the dataset of Botswana' municipalities in 2011 we actually did all together: added to wikipedia and to wikidata. it was very nice to collaborate with wikipedia in Polish and Swedish; they have a great experience in semi-automatic uploads and welcoming new data. At the time Wikidata was at the beginning; today i presume the best solution is to improve wikidata first and them to embed the info from wikidata in the different wikipedias. --Iopensa (talk) 08:52, 16 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
