Wouldn't it be better to put this "quick links" section on your group page, rather than here on the talk page? Klortho (talk) 15:33, 14 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I'll do that! MartinLubell (talk) 15:40, 14 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Unit 9 Team Discussion

edit

Hi Martin, so today we have due:

  • Try to add approximately 8 to 10 paragraphs of new, sourced content (working on this)
  • Write a very brief progress report on your group page (will complete this today)

Ppelletier (talk) 14:33, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello Pauline, is there any way we could talk on the phone a bit today or this evening? I'll be back at noon for a few hours and then 6 pm till late. When do you have time?
Ciao, MartinLubell (talk) 14:46, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi Martin, how about around 6PM. Are you on central time or EST? Actually does not matter, just give me a call whenever you are free around that time. Ppelletier (talk) 15:09, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Martin, in case we do not get in touch this evening, my goal will be work on professor Ogg's comment "it may be good to give a general overview of RNA silencing and how it has evolved over the years. Are there any other types of RNA silencing, in addition to miRNA and siRNA, which are considered RNAi? Simply making these distinctions would be a good start to the RNA silencing article." If you want to take the lead on some of the other topics in the outline, I will draft 4 paragraphs that address this with a citation for each per the instructions for this unit. I will also do one more paragraph. In all this I am assuming we only need to come up with 10 paragraphs this week between the two of us. Correct me if I'm wrong about that ... Ppelletier (talk) 22:46, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Martin, good talking to you on the phone just now. I transferred and updated a version of our preliminary outline onto our Group page to reflect what we discussed about the topics and addressing Professor Ogg's comments. I have assigned the headers and sub-headers by marking them with our initials. Feel free to expand on the outline as things arise. Bon courage! Ppelletier (talk) 23:15, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Article selection rationale

edit

(to be later transferred to project page)

  • Very interesting and very current topic.
  • Rapidly growing body of literature

MartinLubell (talk) 04:16, 6 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Martin, on the discussion board it was clarified that we should compose our "rationale for article choice" together, so I took the liberty of adding my two-cents to our group page. The post is clocking in at close to 200 words at present, so feel free to add or subtract as you add your own thoughts and observations. Ppelletier (talk) 00:33, 7 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello Pauline, perfect. What a pleasure it is coming back to the computer and seeing it all well written up! Thanks! For the next week, can we talk on the phone a bit more? There are many things that are confusing to me. Anyway, also, I switched the order on our group page to have the last thing written on top. Hope you don't mind. Brainstorming

edit

From the Watson textbook, Chap 18, p 633: deals with Regulatory DNAs, and p. 641: RISC: RNA-induced silencing complex.

  • Explain distinction between RNAi and RNA silencing (Unrelated to topic, but interesting to add: difference with DNA silencing, p. 620, which actually might relate directly to p. 652 about RITS: TNA-induced transcriptional silencing complex!)
  • Note that RNAi is considered one the "best" Wikipedia articles.MartinLubell (talk) 04:17, 6 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Hmmmm, are we going to just be placing links to the different parts of the RNAi article!? I don't know enough about the topic, but I'm a little fearful..... MartinLubell (talk) 04:42, 6 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • A note on the RNAi talk page: "What is the difference between RNA silencing and RNA interference. Is it just that RNA silencing is in plants, and RNA interference is in animals, or is there more to it than that? If so, shouldn't the pages be merged? SiameseTurtle (talk) 19:07, 19 December 2008 (UTC)MartinLubell (talk) 04:50, 6 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • I keep thinking: KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid): Maybe we should just explain the main differences between RNA silencing, DNA silencing, RNAi, and then point to the RNAi article.
  • There is also a Gene_silencing article! Maybe our role would be to get rid of the extraneous articles, and have them all point to the RNAi article. However, maybe I don't know enough about the subjects, and they are really different!MartinLubell (talk)

Choosing an Article

edit

Hello Martin, just wanted to throw some ideas out there on articles. Below is a list of articles I would be interested in. Just let me know what you think. Any of these would be interesting to me. I noticed we both did RNA silencing last week, so that works for me as well. Part of my thinking is that these broader topics may benefit more from our attention in pulling together different sources than the very specific topics. Although if you disagree with that approach I am open to taking on one of those.

  1. Regulator gene
  2. Mutation
  3. Cell–cell interaction
  4. Gene map
  5. Genotyping

Ppelletier (talk) 14:41, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello Pauline, I'm not able to stay long, but just a quick thought about being able to upgrade the helix-loop-helix rather quickly to B status. Of course, it's hard to tell, maybe the content is fooling me and it is not very helpful. Anyway, I'm also open to what we both decide, it's fine. The DNA silencing would be very interesting, but maybe also pretty complicated. Gene map, I would stay away, it seems impossible, and gene mapping seems to the thing, I don't quite understand the differentiation. Genotyping seems very interesting. Maybe we can talk on the phone and have a better feeling what we're capable of. (I'm not very confident in molecular biology :) Talk to you tomorrow afternoon or evening. Ciao! MartinLubell (talk) 04:57, 4 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi Martin, helix-loop-helix works for me. If you want to claim it, go for it. Otherwise, just give me a call and we can discuss further. I'll visit the site later tonight to see if you have claimed it and if not, I will. Ppelletier (talk) 14:41, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello Pauline, I noticed that later for Unit 8-9 wikipedia, we have to "add approximately 8 to 10 paragraphs of new, sourced content." I think it will be hard to do for the helix-loop-helix, so I think you're right, let's do more of a broad topic. I'll call you to see about doing the RNA silencing or Genotyping. Ciao MartinLubell (talk) 16:01, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello Pauline, you are probably right in the middle of work and you can't answer the call, so I'll just update the class page to DNA Silencing, and you can change it of course! Ciao MartinLubell (talk) 16:35, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello again, I'm asking Chris (Klortho) to give me "Edit" rights to the 81 course page. MartinLubell (talk) 16:47, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi Martin, really appreciate your following up. RNA silencing sounds great and I see you got it claimed. Look forward to working on it. I agree, that choosing a narrow well defined topic would be productive for research purposes--i.e., more suited to the research objectives of an expert. However, the broader topics are also more accessible to general readership, albeit daunting because of their potential scope. I think we struck a happy medium with RNA silencing. It is an important, yet underdeveloped article with aspects that are notable and relevant from the general science perspective. And we both initially briefed it! So there you have it. Thanks again and look forward to writing this with you. Sorry, but I am very difficult to get a hold of during the work day. à tout à l'heure! Ppelletier (talk) 23:27, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Good Citation Fix :)

edit

I'm still struggling getting a few more articles cited in my sandbox. Till next time! MartinLubell (talk) 05:11, 28 February 2013 (UTC) Also, let's keep the most recent post at the top, OK? MartinLubell (talk) 05:12, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Beginning of our talk page

edit

Hello Pauline, I quickly skimmed what we have to do, and I think we have to find 2 articles each that we cite. I'm wondering what the bottom stubs are for, the ones with 81X? Talk to you later. (The HW looks pretty hard..., I have to get cracking tomorrow!) MartinLubell (talk) 05:16, 27 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello Pauline, the 2 articles are to be found within the 81X groups. Talk to you later. MartinLubell (talk) 03:03, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi Martin, my apologies for not getting into this sooner. Thanks for summing up the task. Going forward I'll make sure to get a handle on our team projects earlier in the week. Talk to you soon. Ppelletier (talk) 05:09, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
No problem at all! Ciao. MartinLubell (talk) 05:15, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
