Lead section
editThe lead section, on principles, was adapted from DGG's close at the WP:BIRDCON RfC. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 04:20, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
In response to one post or another that was eventually adapted into part of this page, someone asked about the idea that "Robert Downey Jr.", versus the comma-laden "Robert Downey, Jr.", had become dominant even in American publishing. While this is not an article and thus not a place to cite a bunch of sources (spend that effort working on articles!), this was actually researched heavily. See the February 2016 RfC at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)/Archive 125#RfC: Amending MOS:JR on comma usage, and the WT:MOS discussions (now archived) that led up to it. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 04:25, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
Essay addition

@SMcCandlish:, feel free to mention your further updates, here. GoodDay (talk) 18:12, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, yeah, I did a top-to-bottom tone cleanup pass [1], in response to various criticisms and concerns. Specifically: removing various opinional wording, unnecessary adjectives, statements that might come across as unreasonable dichotomy, most instances of "you" (except where giving direct procedural advice), and most instances of "rule" (except where particularly sensible in the context). It's still too long, but it's better. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 20:02, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- No one's been reverting since & no one's been objecting. Appears to be a consensus for your changes. GoodDay (talk) 20:14, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
- Honestly, some additional feedback from people at the ANI thread would be welcome. If they have concerns they can articulate into reasons to revise particular things (not just generalized dislike or scoffing) then the material would improve further. The intent of this page is to be accurate, to encourage useful approaches to the guidelines (and their revision where needed), and discourage unconstructive ones. It's not to "stake out a position", but I think my weariness with various disruption and finger-pointing clouded my ability to do that well for a while. A couple of my other essays in the general subject area also need similar revision, though I need a break for a bit. Dramaboards really wear me out. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 09:53, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
