Archiving

Someone manually archived all but one discussion about six weeks ago, and nobody has posted any questions since. Does the page look defunct now, so nobody thinks it would be worth posting? WhatamIdoing (talk) 05:09, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • Comments: I don't know why there is a rush to archive pages down to nothing anyway but apparently many people are alright with it. Really good way to kill off traffic to the page If that is the goal or intent ---it works. If it looks dead it might be. May not be a bad thing because I saw an Admin post some advice about a fan site that does not follow policies, guidelines, or community norms. Otr500 (talk) 05:42, 22 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

What is a living person of interest says something notable in a talk show on YouTube? Can I use it as an external source? Londondare (talk) 17:56, 14 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Londondare, linking to something said on a reliable talk show might be useful for corroborating basic biographical facts (along the lines of WP:ABOUTSELF). Just saying something doesn't make it "notable" or significant enough to mention unless independent sources have drawn attention to it. Schazjmd (talk) 18:02, 14 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Official account of Yuzuru Hanyu

edit

Hi everyone! I stumbled over a special case regarding the official X/Twitter account of a living person.

Professional Japanese figure skater and two-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu, who is currently producing ice shows with a global audience, has no official website. All official announcements and press releases related to his pro career are published on his official X/Twitter account, which is mostly managed by staff. In recent years, there have been multiple impersonations/impostor accounts, so I think that in this special case it might be reasonable to link his official X/Twitter account or at least name the correct handle "YUZURUofficial_" in the external links section with a short annotation in parentheses.

But before doing this, I would like to hear an experienced opinion about it. Thank you very much in advance! Henni147 (talk) 12:10, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Since WP:ELMIN very plainly states that only one official link should be included, you could start a discussion on the Talk page of the Wikipedia article on whether you think it's best to keep using the currently-linked YouTube account in the infobox, or to swap it for the X/Twitter account, or alternatively to the Instagram account. The guideline is pretty clear, though: one official link only, because Wikipedia is neither a directory nor a means of promotion. An additional reason for that is that all three official accounts link to one another, so any user accessing the official link from Wikipedia should be able to find their way to the other official accounts. One more thing to take into consideration, Twitter/X now requires an account to view almost anything. As a result it falls afoul of WP:ELNO #6 and possibly #7. So leaving the link that doesn't require an account, or doesn't randomly require an account, is the correct course. Canterbury Tail talk 13:49, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Very good point, I completely forgot about the signup requirement. Pilaz (talk) 14:10, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
ELMIN is "Normally" restricted to only one link, not always. Official links are also generally exempt from ELNO requirements like whether they require registration or are accessible (though in the case of a malware link, we usually switch to an archived copy or use nowiki tags to 'break' the link).
Official links are only excepted from ELNO for "an official page". So only one official page. They have several and as a result they come into account for other links. If you have multiple official links to choose from, one that requires an account and one that links to the others sites that doesn't have an account, you would choose the one that's best and most accessible to all. Their YouTube channel links to their Twitter and Instagram and requires no registration to see those links, so the YouTube should be the one used. Other social media and links are available from their YouTube channel. Canterbury Tail talk 23:13, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
In this case, one option would be to list the Twitter link in the infobox and the YouTube channel under ==External links==. We don't usually put different links in the two locations, but there's no rule against doing so.
@Henni147, would you please also check the Wikidata record at d:Q597023 to make sure it has the correct link? WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:40, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also, if you've got a reliable source about the impersonation problem, then that's sometimes worth mentioning in the article. I think editors usually accept something like like "Multiple attempts have been made to impersonate Hanyu on social media platforms, such as by claiming that Twitter accounts other than his official account, which is YUZURUofficial_, are his" – if we have the sources to back up a claim like that. Thank you very much for all the quick responses! Yes, I can take a look at the Wikidata entries. And the linked YouTube account is a good point, indeed. Forgot about that one.
@WhatamIdoing: Thank you very much for the tipp with mentioning the impersonation issue in the prose! I will definitely do that (I should have a reliable newspaper sources in my archives). Henni147 (talk) 17:49, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
