Timeline

January 28th

In class:

- Introduction to the Wikipedia assignment

After class:

- Begin reading materials listed under “Useful resources” in preparation for group meeting on Feb 4th.

- Create a Wikipedia user account.

February 4th

In class:

- Bring your laptop to class!

- Group assignments.

- Meet in groups to begin working on Wikipedia assignment: Discuss possible topics, begin collecting references.

- Practice making minor edits (e.g., correcting grammatical errors) to existing articles.

February 14th

Due at beginning of class:

- Submit brief (< 1 page) proposal for a new article (one per group):

Explain the main topic of your article and list of sub-topics that you plan to include. Briefly describe why you think it would be useful to have an article on this topic in Wikipedia and who might be interested in the information that you plan to include.

February 19th

In class:

- Proposals returned with feedback

After class:

- Begin drafting article, starting with a 3-4 paragraph summary that will serve as the lead section for the full length article. Use sandbox in the beginning, but don't wait too long to move the article to the main space so that feedback can be provided. As you continue to build the article, respond to feedback from other Wikipedia users.

March 4th

In class:

- Meet in groups to work on Wikipedia assignment

April 11th

In class:

- Make final revisions and post article

- Submit brief report (one per group) on your article and the process involved in creating it.
