Class 17 (10/23): Researching Urban History and Editing Wikipedia

  • Register using your The Ohio State University name.# (kenitzer.1 for example) as your username.
  • Complete the online training for students. During this training, you will make edits in a sandbox and learn the basic rules of Wikipedia.
  • Create a User page, and and click the "enroll" button on the top left of this course page.
  • After you create an account, your user account will be listed on the course page.
  • To practice editing and communicating on Wikipedia, try introducing yourself to any Wikipedians helping your class (such as a Wikipedia Ambassador), and leave a message for a classmate on their user talk page. Many times other users on the outside will find you!

Final Project Pt. 1 (Due 11/13): Rough Draft

  • Research your neighborhood and start building content for it in your sandbox.
  • At this point you should have critically evaluated/assessed your existing Wikipedia article.
  • Identified deficiencies, and provide a outline in your Sandbox.
  • Article Outline Established and 30-50% of Content In Place (Including Photos if you have them already)
  • Compile a bibliography of relevant research and post it to the talk page of the article you are working on (HINT: Wikipedia has a built in citation generator, fill in as much information as you can.)

Final Project Pt. 2a (Due 12/2): Draft for Peer Review

  • Article to 90% completion expanding your article into a comprehensive treatment of the topic.
  • Photos, Images and Graphics are expected.
  • Content expected to be well written.
  • In Class discussion on experiences and opportunity to discuss problems.

Final Project Pt. 2b (Due 12/5): Draft for Peer Review Comments

  • Peer review the assigned articles.
  • Copy Edit as needed.
  • Leave suggestions on the article talk pages.

Final Project Pt. 3 (Due 12/16): Final Project Content

  • Finalize the content in your sandbox. This is where your primary grade will come from as it is the content that your group generated.
  • Pictures, Images and Graphics are finalized
  • Content expected to meet GA (Good Article) Standards (although you aren't to submit them for that status).
