Create a Wikipedia Account and join the course on the APSWI Page (Due Jan 30; 5 points)

• Email me your username by the due date so I can add you to the course portal

The Basics (Due Feb 13; 10 points)

• Read APSWI Editing Handouts and Complete Online Tutorials (Due Feb 13)
• Handout: Welcome to Wikipedia (available in print or online from the Wikimedia Foundation)
• Leave messages on the Talk pages of 2 classmates (Due Feb 13)

Explore topics (Due Feb 27; 20 points)

• Read handouts on evaluating articles
• Handouts: Using talk pages, Evaluating Wikipedia article quality, Wikimarkup cheatsheet, Advice for choosing articles and How to get help
• Evaluate a completed article related to class and leave comments and suggestions on that article’s talk page
• Research Wikipedia stubs or started articles and list 3-5 that you’d be interested in completing on your user page
• a good place to start is WikiProject_Neuroscience
• Follow proper talk page etiquette: Wikipedia:Talk_page_guidelines#Technical_and_format_standards

Citing Sources (Due Mar 3; 10 points)

• Read handouts: "Referencing on Wikipedia” and “Understanding Wikipedia’s copyright policy”
• Add 1-2 sentences of content to any related (completed) article and include the proper citation

Choose Article and Start Research (Due Mar 6; 10 points)

• Choose article you will write based on my feedback, remove the rest from your user page. Add your article to the class's course page.
• Delete all other articles from your user page
• Go to the Library and get started looking up sources
• Bibliography (5+ papers) posted to the talk page on your article
• Start reading

Start Draft (Due Mar 13; 10 points)

• Read handouts on Wikipedia culture and etiquette
• Post a summary of your intended article (stub) in your sandbox or intended improvements (started article) on the article talk page
• Continue to polish and expand, seeking feedback from classmates, TA, instructor, and other wikipedia users

Move to Main Space (Due Apr 16; 10 points)

• If you haven’t done so already, you need to move your expanded draft to the main published space
• Handout: Moving out of your sandbox
• Continue to expand
• Communicate with collaborators on the talk page

Peer Review and Copyedit (Due Apr 23; 30 points)

• Select two classmates whose articles you will peer review
• Peer Review and copy edit the two articles you chose
• Give feedback on those articles’ talk pages
• Submit to Wikipedia Reviewer

Building Your Article (Due May 1; 25 points)

• Read handouts on adding images and article quality
• Handouts: “Uploading images” and “Evaluating Wikipedia article quality”
• Your article should be comprehensive now and include appropriate images/figures/etc.

Respond to Feedback and Final Article (Due May 1; 50 points)

• Read over the comments from your peer reviewers and any other outside collaborators
• Make necessary revisions
• Article should be complete at this point

Reflection & Presentation (Tentatively Due May 5-9; 50 points)

• You will write a short reflective essay on your experience with the Wikipedia project
• You will also need to prepare a presentation. This presentation should cover the article you wrote for the project as well as your experience with the process.
