IDST2400.03 explores innovative movements in the visual arts in Europe, as well as selected other cultures, during the 19th century and early 20th century. We will consider the influence of artistic exchanges between Europe and Latin America and discuss the impact of the new medium of photography on European artists. Additionally, we will see how the opening of trade with Japan and the rise of imports from Africa had a profound impact on them. This course will be focused on the analysis of painting and sculpture, but we will set the visual arts within the larger cultural and historical context of the period.
