Workshop 1: Feb 5, 630-830, Room C415B, Wikis/Wikipedia 1 Led by Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors, Ann Matsuuchi User:Mozucat & Richard Knipel User:Pharos; Covering: user and article talk pages, signing comments, page history, creating and linking diffs.

Basics of editing Handouts: Using talk pages, Evaluating Wikipedia article quality, Wikimarkup cheatsheet Advice for choosing articles and How to get help Create a user page. To practice editing and communicating on Wikipedia, introduce yourself to any Wikipedians helping your class (such as a Wikipedia Ambassador), and leave a message for a classmate on their user talk page. Milestone All students have Wikipedia user accounts.

Week 4: 2014 Feb. 26 - Wikipedia Workshop 3 & Wikipedia assignment 1 DUE

DUE 2/26: Add one well cited paragraph to an article related to your research. Submit a diff of your work to both Michael and Maura’s talk page. If you didn’t make it to the Wikis workshop, please watch this video, and do this training.


Assigned: Collaboratively written Wikipedia article. In class we will form three groups of three to four students to work on books from the list below:

Some guidelines for the assignment:

If you are improving an existing article, write a summary version reflecting the content the article will have after it's been improved, and post this along with a brief description of your plans on the article’s talk page. If you are starting a new article, do this work in the sandbox of one of your team members. * Begin working with your team on the assigned entry and fix any major issues. Conduct research in preparation for expanding your article. Compile a bibliography of relevant research and post it to the talk page of the article you are working on. Begin reading the sources. If you starting a new article, use the sandbox to write out a well cited summary, and the critical reception sections, and then post it into article space When you post into article space, let your ambassadors and instructors know. Make subsequent updates in the article space.

Led by Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors, Ann Matsuuchi (User:Mozucat|talk) & Richard Knipel (User:Pharos|talk)

Covering: review of material from Wikis/Wikipedia 1, wiki projects, best practices.

Q&A session with instructor and Wikipedia Ambassadors about interacting on Wikipedia and getting started with writing. Talk about Wikipedia culture and etiquette, and (optionally) revisit the concept of sandboxes and how to use them. Open discussion of the concepts of neutrality, media literacy, and the impact and limits of Wikipedia.

Week 8: 2014 Mar. 26 - Wikipedia Assignment 2 DUE: Collaboratively created Wikipedia entry.
