Week 1: No class

Happy Labour Day

Week 2: Wikipedia Essentials

In class

• Overview of the course
• Introduction to how Wikipedia will be used in the course
• Handout: Welcome to Wikipedia (available in print or online from the Wikimedia Foundation)

Assignment (due week 2)

• Read: Five pillars, a explanation of Wikipedia's basic rules and principles
• Read: Account and user page creation handout
• Watch:Video on creating an account,
• Set up a Wikipedia account and user name

Week 3: Editing basics

In class

• Basics of editing
• Anatomy of Wikipedia articles, what makes a good article, how to distinguish between good & bad articles
• Tips on finding the best articles to work on for class assignments

Assignments (due week 3)

• Watch: Talk pages tutorial video
• Read: Evaluating Wikipedia article quality brochure, Wikimarkup cheatsheet

Week 4: Create user page

In class

• Handout:Referencing handout, Referencing: Wikicode handout, Plagiarism handout, Citing sources tutorial video, RefToolbar citation tool tutorial video

Assignments (due week 5)

• Create a user page, and sign up on the list of students on the course page
• Work on Assignment 1, posted in Blackboard

Week 5: Using sources

Assignment 1 (due today)

• Hand in User name and marking template.
• Submit Assignment 1 on Wikipedia sandbox ONLY

For next class

• Instructor evaluates student's article selections, by week 8 .

Week 6:

No assignment due this week

Week 7: No class

Week 8:

In class

• Assignment 1 feedback will be provided by this date.
• Begin working on Assignment 2, using the feedback from Assignment 1.
  • You will be given suggestions for which articles to use for the main Wikipedia comparison project (Assignment 2).
• Assignment 2 is posted in Blackboard.
• Midterm exam

Week 9 : Continue working on project

• Continue working on Assignment 2
• Seek assistance or feedback

Week 10: Final project

In class

• Finalize final project

Week 11: Peer review

• Final project due
• Post assignment 2 to sandbox
• Peer review two students projects in their sandboxes and post comments to their discussion pages. Choose students that do not have a lot of comments already (due week 12)

Week 12: Discussion page

• Post comments to discussion page of actual Wikipedia article, as directed.

Week 13: Wikipedia Community

• You have completed all the assignments!
• Check out if you have had any feedback on your discussion page from the Wikipedia community.

Week 14: Review

• Check out if you have had any feedback from your posting to the Discussion pages on Wikipedia
• Review for final exam

Week 15: Final exam

• Check out if you have had any feedback from your posting to the Discussion pages on Wikipedia
• Final exam
