edit

T 9/10

In class

Discuss reading on person perception.

Th 9/12 Discuss reading on stereotypes.

Assignments (due week 4)
  • Critically evaluate an existing Wikipedia article related to the class, and leave suggestions for improving it on the article’s talk page. There are some low-quality articles listed in the articles section of our APS page.
  • Research and list 3–5 articles on your Wikipedia user page that you will consider working on as your main project. Ask your instructor for comment.

You should be looking for stubs or starter articles, as these will allow you to write most of the article. A good place to look is in Social psychology stubs. If you are interested in writing about a prominent social psychologist, then check out the list of stubs for psychologists. Make sure that the person you choose is a social psychologist: Psychologist stubs.

Refer to the handout Advice for choosing articles.

Week 4: Using sources, class discussions

edit

In class
  • Meet in computer lab.

  • Q&A session with instructor about interacting on Wikipedia and getting started with writing.
Assignments (due week 7)
  • If you are starting a new article, write a 3–4 paragraph summary version of your article—with citations—in your Wikipedia sandbox. If you are improving an existing article, write a summary version reflecting the content the article will have after it's been improved, and post this along with a brief description of your plans on the article’s talk page. This assignment will be graded as a group grade, so it does not matter which student's Wiki account is used to make these changes (that is, it does not matter who writes on the talk page or creates content in their sandbox).
  • Begin working with classmates and other editors to polish your short starter article and fix any major issues.
  • Continue research in preparation for expanding your article.
Milestone
  • All students have started editing articles or drafts on Wikipedia.

Th 10/10

In class
  • Discuss reading on attraction.
Assignments (due week 8)
  • Move sandbox articles into main space.

  • Begin expanding your article into a comprehensive treatment of the topic.
  • At this point, the two students in your group should have divided the sub-headings between you. That is, each of you should take primary responsibility for editing certain sections of the article. You should read your partner's drafts of sections and make changes and comments. Remember that as long as you are logged into your account when you make these changes, I will be able to determine precisely what information was contributed by each student. This is important for evaluating your work for grading.
