Meeting Information

edit

Our next meeting is tomorrow, September 6, at 6:00 P.M. in Room 344 of the 18th Avenue Library (same time and place as last week). Per usual, food will be provided. We recommend bringing a laptop computer to this meeting if possible.

Meeting Topic

edit

There is an active Wikipedia in 292 different human-readable languages, making it possible for nearly anyone with a computing device and an internet connection to access Wikipedia articles. But what about computers? Wikipedia articles are effective at conveying information to people, but computer programs often have a hard time parsing the content of an article. Is there another way to organize information, one that makes the relationships between topics, categories, and articles more clear? Enter Wikidata, a Wikimedia project aimed at creating an open database of information.

Wikipedia Tidbit of the Week

edit

The Wikimedia Toolforge [1] is a place where developers can host code projects that enhance or support Wikimedia projects in some way. Among other tools, you can find the Wikidata game (shortened URL: http://go.osu.edu/wdgame). This online game helps you improve the accuracy and scope of Wikidata's knowledge base by answering simple questions about a topic. Give it a try!
