Welcome Back

edit

Hopefully everyone is having a great first day of classes. Whether you're a returning member or just signed up at the involvement fair, we're look forward you seeing you at our first meeting of the semester.

Meeting Information

edit

Our first meeting is tomorrow, 8/22 at 6:00-7:00 P.M. in the 18th Avenue Library room 344 (3rd floor, in the Research Commons).

We'd appreciate if you could fill out our When2Meet [1] by next Friday, 8/31 so that we can make our future meetings work for as many members as possible.

First Meeting Topic

edit

Every meeting, we focus on a particular topic relevant to Wikipedia or modern society as a whole. Our first topic is fake news. We'll talk about how and why fake news spreads, how Wikipedia's structure and policies work to keep articles accurate and objective, and a few notable examples of hoaxes that slipped through the cracks.

Account Creation

edit

While anonymous editing is permitted on Wikipedia, having an account brings many benefits, including the ability to keep track of your edits and (eventually) edit protected pages. We'll walk through setting up an account tomorrow at our meeting, but if you don't already have one and would like to get a head start, here is the link. We'll also cover how to sign up for the Wikipedia Connection course page, which allows us to easily collect statistics on how many articles our members create or improve throughout the semester.
