Steps to save the mentees! edit

Check in on the newbies
  1. Each team will have links from the spreadsheet that you can click on to launch a shiny new version of the tracker.
  2. You'll see contributions by new users that you can look after appear.
  3. Check those contributions - look for signs of trouble. You'll want to check:
  • The contribution. Does it make sense? Is there a way we can help?
  • The user's talk page. Did they get a nasty-gram? Was it deserved, if so?
    • Don't be afraid to jump in! If they entered data that needs a source, find one! If they got a bad warning, take it off! Send the new user a note saying what you did, by email. Teach them.
  • Check for patterns - anything unusual or odd. Is the user asking for help? Help them!
  • Is someone being mean to them? Get in the middle!
Share how it went
  1. Then, go back to the spreadsheet and tell us who you helped.
  2. In the notes column, tell us anything we need to know. What would make this easier? Are you feeling effective? How can James and Philippe help?

It's really important that we step in quickly and help out if something goes wrong, so please try to make sure someone from your team is checking in on these folks every day. If you need James or Philippe to cover a day, just let us know. Our job is to protect these new users, and get them through the tumultuous first few days. If we do this well, it could really mean that we get a whole new crop of great new users!
