For the second unit of the class, you will be writing or editing an article on Wikipedia. This assignment will have several important learning outcomes:
• Firstly, this assignment expands your sense of audience beyond the confines of the classroom. You are not writing just for your professor or your peers, but rather for a public audience.
• Secondly, this assignment will help you understand that research and writing are collaborative activities. As part of a community of writers, you will edit your peers’ work, and they may edit yours. Other editors in the larger Wikipedia community may edit your work, or even take something down completely. Don’t worry: you will be graded and assessed on the quality of your work and what you learn from the process, rather than by what sticks.
• Lastly, you will learn to write an informative encyclopedia entry from a neutral point of view, without original research. You will practice evaluating sources of information for credibility, currency, and accuracy.
