In this course, we will discuss various political issues relating to gender and sexuality in Native American and Indigenous communities across the United States. We will begin by tracing colonial histories and institutionalization of scholarly fields such as gender and women's studies, ethnic studies, and Native American and Indigenous studies. This course draws on Indigenous feminisms and queer theories, and anti/colonial studies to engage with questions and critiques of hetero-patriarchy, settler-colonialism, and historical erasure. We will specifically ask how gender and sexuality can operate with concepts of Indigenous sovereignty, refusal, and relationality.
