Since 2017, hip-hop has held the the crown as the most dominant genre for the first time in the history of Nielsen and Billboard ratings; in the past rock held the crown (McIntyre 2017, http://bit(.)ly/2r3aMfU).

If we go way back ... back in time...to the birth of hip-hop in early 1970's, the dominance of male and masculine performance in DJing, breaking dancing (often called b-boyin), and MC-ing/emceeing might differ from our expectations. Women's contributions have been largely hidden or erased by the persistent misrepresentation of girls and women as "bitches, hoes, and tricks" in hip-hop's gender wars since the rise of gangsta rap in the early 1990s.

This course introduces a critical black feminist pedagogy to the study of music in hip hop. Students will examine hip-hop music and culture as an aspect of larger systems of gender inequality and patriarchal oppression by adopting a black feminist standpoint. They will listen to the music and dance of Black women and girls, read Black feminist writing, and they will write raps about what they learn and perform freestyles in group ciphers. Throughout the course, they will become editors of Wikipedia to resist and dismantle the gender bias currently being reproduced in articles (or the lack thereof) about hip-hop on the fifth most popular website on the Internet (Alexa 2019).

Timeline

Week 2

Course meetings
Thursday, 31 January 2019
Starts next week

Our work as Wikipedians (that's what editors call themselves) will help Art+Feminism, AfroCrowd, and groups representing marginalized communities within Wikipedia turn the 6th largest website on the Internet into a gender inclusive space where black women and their contributions to hip-hop culture are recorded. Editing Wikipedia also is a lesson in the situated-ness of knowledge creation -- everything is situated in relations of power and oppression. We will witness how patriarchy, heteronormativity, sexism, and racism are factors in online spaces where we share and create content for the world.

Week 3

Course meetings
Tuesday, 5 February 2019   |   Thursday, 7 February 2019
In class - Wikipedia essentials

Welcome to your Wikipedia project's course timeline. This page will guide you through the Wikipedia project for your course. Be sure to check with your instructor to see if there are other pages you should be following as well.

Your course has also been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. Check your Talk page for notes from them. You can also reach them through the "Get Help" button on this page.

To get started, please review the following handouts:

Assignment - Learn the basics
  • Create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you. (To avoid hitting Wikipedia's account creation limits, this is best done outside of class. Only 6 new accounts may be created per day from the same IP address.)
  • It's time to dive into Wikipedia. Below, you'll find the first set of online trainings you'll need to take. New modules will appear on this timeline as you get to new milestones. Be sure to check back and complete them! Incomplete trainings will be reflected in your grade.
Assignment - OPTIONAL
Illustrate an article

You'll want to find or create an appropriate photo, illustration, or piece of video/audio to add to an article.

  • Before you start, review the Illustrating Wikipedia handbook, or see Editing Wikipedia pages 10–11.
  • When you've reviewed those pages, take the training linked below.
  • When you're ready to start finding images, remember: Never grab images you find through an image search, or those found on Instagram, Tumblr, Reddit, Imgur, or even so-called "Free image" or "free stock photo" websites. Instead, you'll want to find images with clear proof that the creator has given permission to use their work. Many of these images can be found on search.creativecommons.org.
  • Don't just upload an image to Wikipedia. Instead, upload it to Wikipedia's sister site for images, Wikimedia Commons. For instructions, read through the Illustrating Wikipedia handbook.
