This course provides is an introduction to the cultural, social, and communicative dimensions of chronic, life-limiting illness, dying, and death. Students explore how chronic illness, dying and death involve complex relationships with others that are structurally bound by historical, social, and cultural norms. Some important areas to be examined include the medicalization and social implications of chronic illness and death, cultural perceptions of dying as a process, suicide, expressions of grief, and strategies to aid bereavement.
