This is class for advanced undergraduates in the English, Writing, and Culture AND English Education programs. Students will spend the semester studying the works of Edith Wharton. The culminating course project will be the creation of Wikipedia entries for short stories / novellas by Edith Wharton which are important in the field of literary studies (and are included in literature courses) but which have yet to included in Wikipedia. Students will work in groups (approximately 4 per group) and workshop their entries with classmates. When actively working on the project, we will set aside the equivalent of .75 credit-hour of our four credit-hour course to this project, including some in-class meeting time. Groups will generate annotated bibliographies of criticism and other material related to their stories and once a rough draft of the Wikipedia material has been generated, each individual student will write a 6-7 page analytical paper based on this research which moves them into the terrain of original research and argument. This paper may engage with additional literary texts from the course.
