In this class, we will explore perceptions and portrayals of Iran from ancient Iranian kings to the present. The focus of the class will be largely modern, but we will analyze aspects of Iranian history which are important to Iranians today, focusing on Iranian religion, politics, culture, and identity. You will learn about ancient Iranian history, how Iran became a Muslim country and, later, a Shi’i country, and how Iran’s history and culture informs contemporary Iranian religion and politics.
