This is a first-year writing course centered around the theme of place. As with all W101 sections at Denison University, the course is intended to build students' skills in reading academic articles, finding and evaluating sources, incorporating and citing sources appropriately, tailoring writing to specific audiences and purposes, and engaging in writing processes that include peer review and revision.

This specific iteration of the course will give students the opportunity to learn more about Licking County, Ohio (where Denison University is located) and to develop deep connections to the place that will be their home for the next four or more years.

One of the major assignments in the course will be to create or make a significant contribution to a Wikipedia entry. Students will work together in groups of two or three to research places or events in Licking County. Using the training and resources provided by Wiki Edu, along with the resources provided by the Denison University Library, students will create contributions that rely on a minimum of 3 sources.

Some potential options for students include: • Creating entries for state nature preserves in Licking County (Morris Woods, Spring Valley, or Cranberry Bog State Nature Preserves) • Expanding entries on one of the many ghost towns in Licking County • Adding an entry about Cornell School (a one room school in Licking County) and including pictures and a description in the gallery for the One-Room School Wikipedia page • Updating information about the new Intel plant in the Licking County entry • Creating an entry about the 1910 lynching of Carl Etherington (a 17-year-old deputy who was lynched by angry mob for enforcing prohibition laws) • Updating entries for cities and villages in Licking County, Ohio to include 2020 census data • Update census information in Newark, Ohio entry and Granville, Ohio to include 2020 census data • Write about history of Abolitionist Movement and Underground Railroad in Licking County (adding a new Underground Railroad Site pages or expanding Abolitionism entry)
