This course will introduce students to the rich history of travel writing produced from the Middle Ages to the present. Travel writing has been used as umbrella term to refer to a wide variety of texts—some travelled for pleasure, or to explore and conquer, but many others travelled for health, religious, or work-related reasons. As a result, the texts involved will incorporate these different genres as well as texts from different historical periods and cultures. In addition to reading assignments and discussion, the class will engage in non-traditional assignments that take us out of the classroom to look at the world through the eyes of the traveler.
Ultimately, we will focus on three themes which provide connections between the many works in this diverse genre: 1) How travel and travel writing are a quest to understand the self, 2) to what extent travel writing creates genuine cross-cultural understanding, and 3) how travelers seek to define the concept of the “spirit of place” (genius loci).
