This page describes the process of transferring images from the SIRIS database to The Commons. The SIRIS database is maintained by the U.S. Federal government, therefore the images contained therein are in the public domain, and can be uploaded to The Commons, and other website that use them for educational purposes.
There are two primary ways to upload images to The Commons:
- Using the from a US federal government source page.
- If your images are in Flickr, you can use a Flickr "Tool". The following tools can assist:
- Upload work from Flickr
- This requires downloading the image to your computer and then uploading it; consider instead these direct tools:
- Bryan's upload tool page (from User:Flickr upload bot, can take up to 24 hours)
- Magnus' upload tool page (appears to be broken)
As a trial effort, the 39 images in the SIRIS database for the city of Indianapolis have been pulled from SIRIS and placed into this Flickr set and assigned a Creative Commons license. These images are being uploaded into The Commons with the following categories:
- Outdoor sculptures in Indianapolis
- Public art in Indianapolis
- SOS! images from Indianapolis
Using Bryan's upload tool edit
Bryan's tool pulls image from Flickr and puts it into The Commons, and takes with it the images title, description, metadata, but not its mapped location. This is an easy and accurate way to get images to The Commons from SIRIS.
An example of how it works:
In the SIRIS database there is an entry for an untitled work by Gary Freeman, with a corresponding image. Through research, this entry was identified as the artwork "Broken Walrus II."
The image, which also has a separate page in the SIRIS database, was pulled from the SIRIS database and uploaded to the WSPA Flickr account and given Creative Commons attribution. Here is Broken Walrus II in Flickr.
The only adjustment that must be made when moving from Flickr to The Commons is that the link to the SIRIS database has to be re-entered. When the link is placed into the Flickr description box, it is slightly re-formatted. Simply re-paste the link during the edit revision process.
Also add the following categories (city dependent): Outdoor sculptures in Indianapolis | Public art in Indianapolis | SOS! images from Indianapolis.

The title of Flickr image has this information: Title from SOS! data (correction in parenthesis) Artist from SOS! data (Year from SOS! data in parenthesis)
Like this: [Title] by [Artist] ([Year])
After this information the "SOS! Control number was listed. This number is found at the bottom of the SIRIS record. This information is placed [in brackets].

A triangular shape on one end connects to a rectangular shape on the other end by two long beams. The beams extend from the top of the triangle, parallel to one another, gradually getting wider so they are the same width as the rectangle when they reach it. Described by the sculptor as looking like a grasshopper.
