... Title: Preparation for your recording
[Intro] When preparing for a screencast, there is one important principle to keep in mind: Simplify. We want the viewer to be able to easily focus on the points covered. To assist with that, we want to remove any distracting elements. rapid montage of all following images.
[Points] We want to simplify the physical recording environment, and also the computer's interface. [text]
  • Audio noise
  • Interface distractions
Background noise can interfere with your speech [have a noisy background here, show AND tell]. Try to find a quiet place to record your audio, away from street noise. Turn off your phone, close your door.

[sound effects such as horns, background voices, door slamming, telephone ringing, etc.]

  • [visual] distortion effects (shaking screen effect (wiggle the powerpoint window))
The screen. We want to simplify the 3 main layers of the computer's visual component.

[then transition to:]

The wiki-account. We want to display the default interface, to avoid confusion. You can either create a new account, or reduce the visible customization of your own account.
If reducing your own customizations, then remember to check your preferences, and user.css. You just need to log-out, to see the current default interface!
Computer interface. Depending on how much of your screen you are recording, you should simplify any parts that will visible in the final video. This means closing any uninvolved programs, removing any non-standard browser-toolbars, and checking that browser extensions will not interfere or create a distraction. If possible it is best to only record the elements that you are discussing (usually the website itself).
Size. Many screenrecording programs will allow you to select the size and shape of the capture region. Try to keep the capture area small, for the benefit of small screens, embedded player windows (eg youtube), and reduced video file-size. Simply view a 800px wide image, to calibrate a rough screen size.
  • [text] 1024x768 maximum, 800x600 is ideal.
That's it! Your physical and virtual recording environments are now clean and unconfusing.
