| Screencasts are often a collection of moving images that are used to record activities on the computer screen, including mouse movement and live audio for later playback.

| In order to perform a screen capture you'll need certain software. Most software programs used for generating screencasts are compatible with modern day desktop and laptop computers.

| Apart from a capture device, minimal requirements include a microphone, though more advanced users may favor the use of video cameras, still cameras, lighting effects, or other more-advanced captured devices.

| There are a variety of software programs that can be used to produce screencasts. You should choose a software program that is compatible with your capture device.

| Your device's operating system may limit which programs are available to use. Open source programs are generally preferred, though commercial software is also available.

| Screencast programs often include basic capture of screen movement as well as audio. Look for programs that can output editable files, such as mpeg, avi, or ogg. Flash files (.swf) can be difficult to edit, except for the most advanced users.

| Some users choose to create screencasts comprised of a single activity session. These users do not require software with editing capabilities. If, however, you are interested in stitching together two or more activity captures, you will need editing software.

| Screencast software allows simultaneous capture of audio, but some users may find that they need to re-record audio or add sounds from external sources. To do this, audio editing software may be required.
