WP:ODM Category Policy

Category:Orders, decorations, and medals - the main category

The main category for this topic is Category:Orders, decorations, and medals. This category encompasses all orders, decorations, and medals that are issued or awarded as part of national honours systems. However, in most cases, articles about medals or decorations should not be placed directly in this category. Within Orders, decorations, and medals there are national sub-categories. If you have an article about a particular order, decoration, or medal then look for the nation's sub-category and place it there. Only articles of pan-national importance or those relating to the topic itself should be placed directly into the Orders and decorations category.

If you cannot find an appropriate national sub-category then feel free to start one yourself. New national categories should be named according to this pattern: Orders, decorations, and medals of XXX (where XXX is the conventional short form of the country concerned). This new category should be sub-categorised under both Category:Orders, decorations, and medals and Category:XXX (where XXX is once more the name of the country concerned).

The national sub-categories

Each national sub-category takes the form Orders, decorations, and medals of XXX. All nations which have attributable orders, decorations, and medals should have them placed within their individual sub-category.

In cases where there are few articles on a country's medals, it is appropriate to categorise articles directly into this national sub-category. However, once coverage expands, the following scheme of internal categorisation ought to be used:

Each of these categories can be omitted as appropriate, ie US has no federal or state orders, therefore no need to include category, etc. Likewise, in a federal system, some of the 'provincial' categories can be omitted if they do not apply - ie. Canada has no provincial military awards, they all come from the federal government.
