Gernrode is a little town on the northeastern edge of the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt. It was first recorded in 961 and, in 1539, was given the right to bear a coat of arms and seal, which was equivalent to be granted town rights. For almost 700 years the town was the seat of one of the first free convents to formed after the Reformation.
In the old town with its winding streets there are many buildings representing the different centuries of the town's history. In the little market place stands the town hall which dates to the Historicism period. West of it is the Romanesque tower of the old market church of St. Stephen, as well as the best known attraction, the Romanesque Church of St. Cyriakus which is on the southern route of the Romanesque Road.
