Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Styling disambiguated titles

Based on a discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals) (and previously at WP:VPIL), there is a proposal to change the way that page titles with disambiguated titles (bracketed words) are styled.

This page should serve initially as a drafting area, where we can determine what issues need to be addressed, and what exact style we collectively agree should be put forward. Examples examples examples, below. Discussion on the talkpage.

Once the design and discussion have concluded, we can clean up this example page to explain the final-conception cleanly, and potentially put the idea forward as a formal proposal via an RfC.

Proposed technical methods of implementing edit

  1. The Navajo Wikipedia already has this implemented, eg nv:Ndilkal (chʼil), using the template nv:Bee álnééhí:Tdab (in approx 60 articles), but also uses additional styling (italics).
  2. ...

Instances to be bypassed edit

If it were implemented with a template, on a case-by-case basis, there would be many thousands of instances. [Can anyone determine an exact number, or a close approximation?[1]]

It might be better to implement it as the default for all titles ending with (brackets), and just create a technical bypass for these types of titles that do not require the style-change:

  1. Pages that include brackets as part of the actual title, eg Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
  2. Pages that end in "... (disambiguation)"
  3. Pages that end in brackets and include one of the other {{dmbox}} templates, eg Kernel (mathematics) and Derby (horse race) and Thunderbolt (comics)

Notes edit

  1. ^ The now-deleted list Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of songs with brackets in their titles might contain clues? categories?

A potential idea for the future edit

A tangential proposal, for consideration in the future:
