Here are the steps you need to take:
1) Multiply out everything in parentheses.
2) Add like terms (integers add to integers, and X's add to X's) on each side of the equals sign.
3) Get all the X's on one side of the equals sign and all the integers in the other side thru addition or subtraction, and again add like terms.
4) Divide both sides by the coefficient in front of the X.
5) This will give you your answer for X. Plug it into both values of X in the original equation and solve both sides, and they should be equal, unless you made a mistake. This is your check. StuRat (talk) 22:53, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
