Labor History Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon

Celebrate International Labour Day by joining a community interested in promoting labor history by editing the popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Part celebration and part workshop, help us build awareness and increase visibility of our labor collections and expand page content for labor subjects, individuals, and organizations. We’ll draw content from labor-related collections at the University of Maryland, including AFL-CIO Archives. No editing experience necessary, however ability to use computers and search the internet is necessary. You’ll receive complimentary issues of Labor’s Heritage journal.

This event is part of DC LaborFest 2018, where there are many more events to celebrate the labor movement!


Time and place edit

Friday, May 4, 2018, Noon-3pm

This event will take place at the AFL-CIO headquarters in Washington, DC

  • 815 16th St NW, Washington, DC 20005
  • President's Room, 1st Floor

Attendees will be asked to show a Government issued ID when they enter the lobby

Those unable to attend in person are invited to become Wikipedia editors, and edit pages listed in our goals below.

  • 12:40 pm - Building and editing Wikimedia
  • 2:55 pm - Wrap-up. Editing can continue on an ongoing basis, keep us posted. Virtual editing is encouraged through the month of May! Thank you.
  • 3:00 pm – Clean up room

Goals edit

The UMD Labor History Edit-A-Thon will offer a selection of resources for attendees to:

  1. Use Labor’s Heritage journal sources to contribute to targeted articles.
  2. Create and/or expand articles pertaining to archival labor collections from the University of Maryland’s Special Collections in Labor History & Workplace Studies.
  3. Create and/or expand articles related to labor history in the greater Washington, DC region.
  4. Add external links to finding aids from University of Maryland's Special Collections. Finding aids can be found in ArchivesUM our finding aid database, specifically in the Labor in America guide.
  5. Update out-of-date references and citations for the George Meany Memorial Archive, now known as The George Meany Memorial AFL-CIO Archive at the University of Maryland Libraries.
