Edit-a-thon 1 - Sunday 6 July 2014 edit
- Time: 11:30am to 7:30pm
- Location: 27 North Terrace, Adelaide. (UniSA building located in the red SM building next door to the Riviera Hotel, on the corner of Gray St. Signs will be on the front door. Enter via the side door 10-15m down Gray St - Knock loudly).
- Agenda: Edit-a-thon - a day long session focused on North Terrace, with cameras to take photos as required, with pizza provided.

The event had a somewhat inauspicious start as Bilby, who had been up until 3:30am marking exam papers, wasn't on hand to open the venue at UniSA when Cowdy001 and Tullyis arrived. After some phonecalls, by the time Bilby arrived, they had both departed. Tullyis was able to return later, joining Maelorin, Bahudhara, and Pdfpdf.
Earlier there had been some attempts to advertise the edit-a-thon amongst several local history groups and genealogical societies, but the response shown so far has been limited. A notification was also sent to all those users identified as currently or recently active members of the WikiProjects for Adelaide and South Australia, defined as those who have made edits since the beginning of 2013.
Although all present are experienced editors, a couple of us were unfamiliar with using Apple Macs, but we soon started getting to grips with the platform. The up- and download speeds were impressive to those of us who hadn't yet experienced fibre optic-linked networks before, and we all agreed that the large display monitors were excellent for displaying photos.
The theme for the event had initially been flagged as focussing on North Terrace; the architectural theme remained, but broadened as Bahudhara had brought along a list of "Nationally significant 20th century architecture" in South Australia, published by the Australian Institute of Architects. As a number of items on the list already have WP articles, this was thought to be a good task for the day. Pdfpdf, using the format of a similar list, deployed his list-building skills in creating the new list. Bilby, who had to go out for a while, took the opportunity to take some more photos of historic and significant buildings in North Adelaide, while Bahudhara made a start on uploading his backlog of photos of historic buildings to Commons.
It was an enjoyable day spent in a collaborative atmosphere and we felt that it had been useful, as the new list could serve as an organising tool for identifying gaps in WP coverage of local architecturally related subjects.
As we have another meeting planned for this month, the decision was made to defer setting the date for the next edit-a-thon until then, so that we can better plan the publicity campaign for it, to attract new editors.

Soon after its creation this List was nominated for "speedy deletion", leading to a brief flurry of interactions and comments between several editors. The Afd nomination was subsequently withdrawn by the nominator and the discussion closed with a decision for "speedy keep".
The topic will be discussed further at the next meeting of the Adelaide Wikipedia Users Group on 23 July, with invited guest experts.
