Know My Name International Women's Day Edit-a-thon 2021 edit

Just 18 per cent of biographies on Wikipedia are about women. When it comes to female artists and creators, that number is even lower.

Wikimedia Australia is partnering with the National Gallery of Australia again in 2021 on its Know My Name project, to enhance the understanding and appreciation of work by Australian artists who identify as women.

In March 2021, we are hosting an edit-a-thon ahead of International Women's day. Our goal is to ensure all artists of the Know My Name exhibition and catalogue are represented online. This effort is also part of the Art+Feminism movement.

What should I work on during the edit-a-thon? edit

There are many different ways for you to contribute today. Wikipedia is the product of millions of individual contributions and every change that is made, no matter how small, makes a difference!

We’ve prepared a list of suggested artists and assembled some preliminary sources to get you started. Keep in mind Wikipedia’s Conflict of Interest guidelines when selecting your subject to make sure it is appropriate for you to make the edits. Once you’ve decided which task you’d like to tackle, add your username to the table.

Instructions edit

  • Choose an artist from the artist list. Write your username in the last column so different people don't work on the same page during the edit-a-thon. After the edit-a-thon anyone is able to edit any page. If you need to find more artists, choose one from the artist list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/To-do List of Australian women artists
  • If you are a first-time editor, it may be easier for you to edit an existing page rather than create a new one.
  • If the artist is living, please read and follow the guidelines in Wikipedia: Biographies of living persons (shortcut WP:BLP), for both new pages and editing existing ones.
  • If there is already a page for that artist, check its Talk page for any comments or suggested edits and check the Article page for any templates with suggestions for improvements.
  • Use Australian English and spelling. If you are editing a page about an Indigenous artist, you may use words in the appropriate Indigenous language if you are confident the word is correct.
  • See also the Helpful links under the artist list for more guidance.
