Wikipedia:Images for blocking

The Images and media for blocking policy is to guide the discussions of blocking the images linked into Wikipedia from Wikimedia Commons which violate the basic rules of Wikipedia. Images that have been listed here for more than 5 days are eligible for blocking as described below, if either a consensus to do so has been reached, or no objections to bocking have been raised.

An image must be listed here if a simple procedure of delinking of it fails for some reason (e.g., persistent trolling).

Rationale edit

The proposal originated from the discussion in Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Penis Vandal Again! (POV template vandalised??). This discussion expressed a valid concern that Commons has rather loose criteria for images stored there: once the image is tagged as "PD-self" or something like this, one may upload virtually anything. A number of cases are reported of the usage such images for problematic trolling here in Wikipedia.

At the same time, undesired images from Commons are not covered by the WP:IFD policy, since the latter discussed the deletion of images uploaded directly onto Wikipedia.

Instructions edit

What not to list here edit

  1. Images that violate rules of Commons, e.g., copyright violations. Such images must be listed for deletion in Commons.

What to list here edit

  1. Images used for trolling or vandalism.
  2. Images that violate Wikipedia policies. For example, a user-drawn historical map might constitute original research if it presents a new or innovative view of historical boundaries.

Listing images and media for blocking edit

<If this policy will be basically approved, this section may be easily borrowed from WP:IFD>

Implementation edit

The blocking is accomplished by creating a wikipedia image file with the blocked name, which says that this Commons image is inadmissible in Wikipedia for a specified reason <the actual text is to be elaborated>.
