Is anyone willing to make maps based on these images? The Hawley sketches are public domain, BTW.RO(talk) 19:12, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

Request taken by Goran tek-en (talk) 15:46, 31 May 2015 (UTC).

@Rationalobserver: Now there is a draft for you to look at. It's REALLY hard to be sure of anything on those blurry images, so I have started with one so that we can agree on how they should look. Have a look and give me feedback, anything goes, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 13:38, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks so much for taking this on! It looks great. The only element it lacks are that the dotted/dashed lines represent areas not excavated, so it would be nice to retain that feature. Is that doable? RO(talk) 15:20, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
Or you could just make the dotted lines lighter, like this: File:Chetro Ketl sitemap.png. Whichever is easiest, but this way might be better. RO(talk) 23:39, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
@Rationalobserver: You have to remember that I have zero knowledge of this subject, I don't know what the drawings actually show, I just try to understand and follow it. I didn't realize some lines were dotted, I just thought that some were even more blurred for some reason. All information that can help me is valuable, but I don't want any extra information, it only confuses me.
  • You gave me a link to another drawing, if you have any more you think can help just give them to me.
  • Do you agree on that on the right top corner, it's a north symbol?
  • The text and drawing on the left lower side, I have no idea of what it could be.
New draft to give me feedback on, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:11, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
Sorry. This is my first time asking for new graphics. I'll try to do better. That new version looks perfect, and yes the mark in the top right indicates north. The stuff in the lower left is just the title "Chetro Ketl" and a scale. You could make a new scale by using the top wall of that new graphic, which is 450 feet (140 m) long. RO(talk) 18:31, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
Here's another map for reference: File:Chetro Ketl RS.png. RO(talk) 18:47, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
@Rationalobserver: New draft with scale and so. I'm just trying to make us understand each other and so that we don't do to much unnecessary work. I think I sometimes ask to many questions and set some "demands" but it's just so I won't put in many hours of work in vain. It's nothing personal, often the requester and the graphic worker are two different types of persons so it's easy to misunderstand. So check the draft and see if the scale and north arrow are OK before I do the others. We try to use some conventions and here is a template for maps. Get back to me, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:32, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
That looks perfect, Goran tek-en! RO(talk) 19:07, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
@Rationalobserver: Now there is a draft of the second drawing. It's very hard to see so I guess some. Check it and give me feedback, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:56, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
That looks great, Goran tek-en. Thanks again for taking this on! RO(talk) 18:07, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

@Rationalobserver: Third draft to look at.
Eventually I will need the following for each of the three files;

  • Name of the file
  • Description
  • Category/ies at commons

to be able to upload it at commons. --Goran tek-en (talk) 11:04, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

OK, great! They can all be named Chetro Ketl: then
  1. Second building phase (1030–1070; masonry types II and III)
  2. Second building phase (1062–1090; masonry type III)
  3. Third building phase (1100–1116; masonry types III, IV, and V)
Maybe mention that these are based on sketches by Florence M. Hawley, but I'm not sure it needs to be in the title, maybe just the file description, which I guess is about the same as the title (don't worry too much about the descriptions; I'll expand them later). The category is Chaco Canyon National Historical Park. RO(talk) 15:45, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
@Rationalobserver: I guess you meant "Chaco Culture National Historical Park" for the category. Now you can find them here;

  Done

Yeah, sorry about that. Thanks for making these awesome graphics, Goran tek-en. They look fantastic! RO(talk) 17:50, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
Goran tek-en, did I mess something up, or is the scale of the third one much bigger than the other two ([1])? RO(talk) 17:56, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
@Rationalobserver: No you didn't do anything wrong. I didn't know that you wanted to keep them in some sort of "true" scale referring to the drawings we used as base, if they now are drawn in the same scale. If you want that then I will go back and scale and keep the same drawing area on all three. Just tell me if you want that and I will do it, no problem. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:09, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
Yes. If it's not too much trouble I think they should be the same scale. Thanks! RO(talk) 18:11, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
Goran tek-en, imagine that they are on transparencies that could be stacked in a pile. Hope this makes sense. RO(talk) 18:13, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

@Rationalobserver: Now they are the same scale according to the base drawings, that is all I have as reference. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:41, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

Almost there, Goran tek-en. Thanks for your patience. They only other thing is that the third drawing should line up with the second, so that the round room (Central Kiva G) in the third drawing is obviously the fourth from the left round room in the second drawing. Does that make sense? Instead of centering the third image, it should be offset to the right, like this one: File:Third period construction at Chetro Ketl (1100 to 1116) by Florence M. Hawley Plate XII (1934).png RO(talk) 18:48, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
@Rationalobserver: I haven't understood that they actually are drawings of the same building/area, there are no reference or information to know this and they doesn't look like the same building/area to me. I will look at it tomorrow. --Goran tek-en (talk) 19:02, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
@Rationalobserver: You have to look at at this image were the grey is the 3 drawing.
  • Do you want it positioned like this?
  • Should then the third drawing being enlarged so that the circles have the same size?
  • Should the angel stuff on the right hand side on the 3 drawing line up with drawing 2 structure? --Goran tek-en (talk) 12:54, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
Goran tek-en, It makes sense that the round room (central kiva G in the third drawing) would be slightly larger in the first and second drawings, because it's depicting the third story of that round room, which would be smaller then the first two stories since they tapered up. So I'd leave it the same relative size as Hawley had it. Yes, the angled wall at the right of the third drawing should line up approximately with the right (nominal east) wall of drawings one and two. It would also be nice to label the great kiva (largest round room; second drawing bottom right) and central kiva G (round room in third drawing). Thanks! RO(talk) 15:25, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
@Rationalobserver: Now there are three drafts for you. In the second drawing I took the scale from Chetro Ketl RS but to me that scale seems to be wrong compared to drawing one. Tell me if you want me to remove it from the second drawing or keep it.
I agree that the second scale looks off, but I think we only need it in the first drawing, since that's what Hawley did, and they are all to the same scale anyway. Or, you could just put the same scale from image 1 into images 2 and 3, if you think that's a good idea. They look awesome, Goran tek-en! RO(talk) 17:39, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
Goran tek-en, where are we at here? RO(talk) 15:40, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

@Rationalobserver: New versions uploaded, I have been very busy with other parts of my life. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:03, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

No worries, Goran tek-en. Thanks again for making these for me. They look awesome! RO(talk) 18:05, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

Could you expand this map a little bit farther east? Somehow the caption text at far right got cut off, and it would help if you could add just enough Pacific Ocean to have room for the entire caption text. Alternately, moving the caption text a little westward would also work. -- Nyttend (talk) 14:33, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Done - Resized it, I also expanded the map because, there were some islands on the Pacific Ocean which were also cut off. ///EuroCarGT 16:14, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
