Projects delivered edit

Strategic Goal 1 edit

Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content

Outcomes edit

The first bulk dump of data from the Atlas of Hillforts was uploaded to Wikidata, covering all 4147 hillforts in the database, but not all the data. There is now a project page at Wikipedia:GLAM/Oxford/hillforts. I created various custom queries to make use of the data, at wikidata:User:MartinPoulter/queries/hillforts.

Oxford University Press have confirmed that Electronic Enlightenment has been added to the OUP Scholarship accounts that are given out by The Wikipedia Library. I've added text to Wikipedia:OUP/Scholarship to reflect this and informed the Wikipedia Library team. I will work on a blog post with EE to encourage Wikipedians to take up the opportunity.

Using Wikidata, I've identified eight manuscripts in the Bodleian that have no English Wikipedia article but a substantial article in another version of Wikipedia. I have asked manuscript experts for help, and have got management approval to run a campaign to get volunteers to translate the articles.

Partnerships edit

I had a meeting early in my placement with the Archive of Performances of Greek & Roman Drama and we were planning to do an event in the summer. Their schedule has changed and the time slot when they want an event is now January, so whether I get to work with them depends on future funding.

Activities delivered in the past month with stats: edit

Some of the feedback suggested that attendees wanted more written information to consult after the training, about Wikimedia projects and their role in academia. To respond to this, and to encourage the wider WIGS community, I wrote a tailored briefing which they will publish as a blog post.

Forthcoming: edit

In the next report:

  • One hour masterclass at Oxford Digital Humanities Summer School

Strategic Goal 2 edit

Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level

Outcomes edit

The Bodleian Digital Library blog hosts my guest blog post explaining how Wikidata can link existing databases and allow readers to find resources about an entry. This was written as a contribution to the debate about resource discovery for GLAMs within Oxford.

Partnerships edit

I met with Janet Pierrehumbert, Professor of Language Modelling at Oxford University, who has a proposal about using Wikipedia as a research platform: I've passed this on to the head of research at the WMF.

I met with the Electronic Enlightenment/ Oxford Text Archive team about our intention to bid for a project using Wikidata as a platform for the semantic searching of books. We discussed a small pilot project to aim for initially, which I am still writing up.

On Wikisource, the transcription of the Plomer Dictionary of Booksellers and Printers is ongoing. This activity was highlighted in a Bodleian Libraries newsletter and staff have been invited to join in. As well as helping with much of the transcription, the WS community have created some custom templates to simplify the process.

I was mentioned and quoted in the AHRC press release about the launch of the Atlas of Hillforts, which was picked up by a few outlets:
