About the event edit

Museums Galleries Scotland's Wikimedian in Residence has been in post for 12 months, helping Scotland's Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums increase their open knowledge capacity: training individuals how to use Wikipedia, and advocating for the benefits of open knowledge in a cultural context. CILIP have partnered with the project to present a free training session to members, by the end of which you will:

  • understand more about the benefits of open knowledge in a cultural context
  • know how to edit Wikipedia
  • have edited, and maybe even created new, articles on Wikipedia

In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female while only 15% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. As a result, content is skewed by the lack of female participation. Wikimedia is aiming to close this gender gap, and events like this can help.

This event will focus on the biographies of women missing from the encyclopedia, as suggested by Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red. There is a list of redlinked articles (ie articles which don't yet exist) about women in the United Kingdom on Women in Red's project page here. Please take a look at this list in advance. Writing a new article can be much more time consuming that you might think!

The aim of the day will be to create stub articles for some of these women. Stub articles should be at least 250 words long, and reference 3 external reliable sources. The article should also meet Wikipedia's Standards of Notability for people.

There is a guide to what constitutes a reliable source here.

How do I prepare?
  • Sign up for the event
  • You must create a Wikipedia account in advance. If more than 6 accounts are created from one IP address within 24 hours that IP address will be blocked.
  • Bring a laptop (wi-fi will be provided). Training can be done on a tablet but I promise, it's much much easier on a laptop.
  • Learn about editing if you like: Tutorial, or Getting started on Wikipedia for more information - please note however that we will primarily be using the Visual Editor, not markup.
  • Think about who you'd like to edit about
  • Read the guide to notability
  • Read the guide to reliable sources

Trainers edit

Training will be provided by Museums Galleries Scotland's Wikimedian in Residence Sara Thomas
