Project scope and purpose
editThis is a project focused on sharing the French National Archives' resources with the public and improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the French National Archives. Our goal is to foster collaboration between Wikimedia projects and the National Archives in order to make cultural works more discoverable to the public. We intend to do this through the creation of related Wikipedia content and digitization of materials on Commons and Wikisource.
This project aims to coordinate the sharing of resources between Archives Nationales and the Wikimedia community in a relationship of mutual benefit. The Archives collects, preserves, describes, and provides access to documentary evidence on France's official archives (apart from the archives of the Ministry of the Armies and Ministry of Foreign Affairs) ; a mission that aligns with Wikipedia’s goal to provide “free access to the sum of all human knowledge.”
Expansion of coverage and access to authoritative sources
editExpand coverage on Wikipedia about people and topics relevant to the Archives Nationales’ collections. This includes providing access to sources for citations on existing pages, and creating new pages on notable people and topics.
Media contribution to Wikimedia Commons
editOngoing content donations to Wikimedia Commons featuring public domain documents and images from the Archives, allowing for these images to be utilized by educators and researchers worldwide without restrictions.
A learning experience
editCollaborate with students and lifelong learners to help them grow their knowledge of french History while researching and contributing to Wikipedia articles.
Empower Archives Nationales's staff and volunteers to grow their skills as confidence as Wikipedia contributors.
Provide opportunities for new relationships and connections within the libraries, archives, and museum communities.
