Topic starting 13 March 2006

edit

I'm thinking that a literature topic might be good this week, particularly if we can get the novels wikiproject involved. violet/riga (t) 20:45, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Reading through the suggestions, 9/11 hijackers stands out. Perhaps we could do something else this week and get the novels wikiproject involved so that they could give us an idea of what literature topic would be the right size? Personally I don't know enough about literature articles to say what would be a good list... I think if we choose 20th century fictional novels we're bound to get a whole lot of nominations though and very few of actual merit. Just my two cents. -DMurphy 22:20, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think I'll get to create this tonight as I will be offline. I'll try and sort it out in the morning if nobody else has done it already, but I'd like to see some more discussion of the topic choice first. violet/riga (t) 19:58, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So the main choice seems to be one of the following two:

Which do we think? violet/riga (t) 22:26, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I did some searching on the subject, and science-fiction novels is far too broad. There are over 700 Science Fiction Novels alone. If we really want to do a sci-fi novel topic, we'll have to do something like:

Or if you want to get a little more obscure:

Personally I think the Hugo Award-winning works would be a good category and would give us just the right amount of variety (a little sci-fi and a little fantasy), plus all the articles are bound to be books of importance unlike the other categories, which will likely be obscure. Otherwise, I think we should go with a biography category, but I also agree that right now none of the suggestions are entirely exciting. -DMurphy 22:55, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hugo Award-winning works has my full support - I'll do that when I have time (hopefully this evening). violet/riga (t) 11:31, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps narrow it to a specific continent? In that case I'd say either Europe or Asia would be the best option. --DMurphy 01:36, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'd shy away from obscure ways to connect articles like this. Sure, it makes the nomination process a bit more fun, but when we get to the evaluation, there would be no real method for comparison like we had with Natural Disasters. --DMurphy 04:13, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

didnt see any literature category - would be interesting to do a sampling of 20th century fictional novels, as there are so few featured (i counted 2, with 1 about to be de-featured). could also be a combined effort with the novels wikiproject. Zzzzz 18:21, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

News items

We could look at all the major news stories of one particular month. Perhaps the best idea would be to do one from last month or from this month last year. violet/riga (t) 23:47, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Personally I think current news articles tend to be disproportionately large, and we could probably better serve the wiki if we evaluated articles of more historical or encyclopaedic significance. Plus, since the articles draw so many participants, they tend to be pretty accurate. Just my opinion though. --DMurphy 04:26, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
