Wikipedia Assignment Part 2 edit

On the Christian Hip Hop page I edited the part about Brazilian gospel rap from "Moreover, in Brazil, gospel rap is strongly related to black politics and gospel rap is known to 'cultivate and sustain a distinctive form of conciousness" and something about Gospel Rap being a "way of life" to "Moreover, in Brazil, gospel rap emphasizes the message of the Gospel and salvation through faith over black politics and identity. Gospel Rappers view their music as divinely ordained, and believe their lyrics are a manifestation of the Holy Spirit speaking through them. The Brazilian Gospel Rap movement sees itself as divinely favored over the fallen state of rap in the US and other parts of the world." I cited the Color of Sound (Burdick) which backs this up.

3 Articles I have researched that I would consider working on as my main project are Christian hip hop, Glossolalia, and Baptism with the Holy Spirit. I most interested in doing Christian hip hop...

Wiki Assignment Comprehensive Outline edit

Outline of Upcoming Revisions - > Reaction and Acceptance >Crossover –

Various mainstream rap artists, including Kanye West, Nas, Common, Talib Kweli, and many others, have incorporated mainstream Christian symbols and messages into there music through images, lyrical content, and over-archig themes. Kanye West's hit song Jesus Walks has recieved a notable amount of attention for its faith based conent. http://ethnomusicologyreview.ucla.edu/journal/volume/12/piece/507

The use of religous themes in music that is otherwise regarded as illicit has sparked controversy over the validity of the religous messages expressed through the music. Some religous listeners hold that "rap music, because of what it inherently communicates, is incompatible with the Christian Gospel." http://religiousaffections.org/articles/articles-on-music/can-rap-be-christian-evaluating-hip-hop/

Various prominent Gospel Rappers, such as Compton Virtue, have openly criticized the use of the religous themes in otherwise irreligous music. http://ethnomusicologyreview.ucla.edu/journal/volume/12/piece/507

Others hold that the suffering expressed through rap music manifests itself in a certain spirituality that can be compatible with mainstream religous messages. "Just as the MC slides into notes and dances around beats, “spirit” is not attacked straight on; it is courageously approached from below, from the margins, from youth, from uncertainty, through the structures of capitalism and mainstream media." Peter J. Paris inThe Spirituality of African Peoples

Some think that the use of mainstream religous symbols in predominately African-American music "have exposed millions of White Americans to an aspect of the African-American experience of which White America otherwise might not be aware." http://www.arts.cornell.edu/knight_institute/publicationsprizes/discoveries/discoveriesspring2006/02marchant.pdf

Review of Revisions Done to Christian Hip Hop Page edit

I extended the introduction to better summarize the contents of the whole page. I edited the style and language, as well as reorganized the "History" and "Artists and Styles" sections, as well as relocated information to different sections that was inappropriately placed. I added information already present in different parts of the article to the Industry and Markets sections, I changed "Performances" to "Festivals" and added information on certain Festivals that was present in other parts of the article, and reorganized the Crossover section into two sections, "Crossover" and "Acceptance", and added new information from my own research. I also added "Gospel Rap in Brazil" to forms and subgenres with info from other parts of the article.
