With regard to the naming of Daniels Arch, while walking over to Daniel's Arch is probably the best source (first hand, experiential) I would posit that the VMI Alumni Review published immediately after the dedication (it is published quarterly) most likely has a very good article with photos of the dedication. I did find this referenced in the Statues and Monuments section of the VMI website under the Archives heading.

With regard to the valedictorian being elected by the class as the class's commencement speaker- vs the concept of the valedictorian being the person with the highest GPA- the established tradition at VMI is that the graduating class elects the valedictorian shortly before graduation to serve as its speaker as the class graduates. It is one of those remarkable customs where the tradition is stronger than any written policy. As an additional addendum, the cadet with the highest GPA is the recipient of the First Jackson-Hope Medal and the cadet with the second highest GPA is the recipient of the Second Jackson-Hope Medal.
