Managing a conflict of interest

edit

Hello, Vincent Salyers. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 15:58, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Good morning, Thaddeus. Happy New Year! I'm not quite sure what you are describing as COI. All of the information posted about me is truthful, historical, and rightly identifies past affiliations and awards. Please adivse. Vincent Salyers (talk) 16:02, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
If you are attempting to edit and article about yourself you have a clear conflict of interest. Please read the above explanation and limit your edits to making suggestions on the talk page of the article. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 16:13, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see. So just confirming then, if anyone else was to update my information, it wouldnt be a COI? I guess my lingering real question is how do I get my information updated? 2600:8805:D291:3800:4848:39F5:A0F5:F53A (talk) 16:32, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
It will still be a COI if you ask someone to edit on your behalf to add promotional material to the article. If you have suggestions for the article, use the article talk page. That being said, your edit was incredibly self-promotional (declaring yourself "a renowned scholar") and a copyright violation as you directly cut and paste your own LinkedIn profile. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 16:44, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your pespective, Thaddeus. Unfortunately, I diagree with your assessment about my material as self-promotional. You can see literally hundreds of thousands of sumilar material on Wikipedia. I appreciate your time. 2600:8805:D291:3800:4848:39F5:A0F5:F53A (talk) 16:48, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
It isn't "my" perspective, it is the conflict of interest guidelines. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 16:58, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello Vincent Salyers! Your additions to Vincent Salyers have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 16:59, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

This account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because the username, Vincent Salyers, matches the name of a well-known, living person.

If you are the person represented by this username, please note that the practice of blocking such usernames is to protect you from being impersonated, not to discourage you from editing Wikipedia. You may choose to edit under a new username (see information below), but keep in mind that you are welcome to continue to edit under this username.

If you choose to keep your current username, please send an email to info-en wikimedia.org including your real name and your Wikipedia username to receive instructions from our volunteer response team about account verification. Please do not send documentation without being requested to do so.

If you are not the person represented by this username, you are welcome to choose a new username (see below).

A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive, or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.

Please take a moment to either create a new account, or request a username change of your current account here. The new username that you choose must comply with Wikipedia's username policy.

  • To create a new account with a different username, simply log out of this account and then click here to make a new one.
  • If you prefer to change the username of this account, you may do so by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page (this page): {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken and in use by another account. You can go here to search and see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is available to be taken.

Appeals: If your username is not in violation of Wikipedia's username policy, and if you believe that this block was incorrect or made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the following text to the bottom of your user talk page here: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Thank you. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 18:22, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
