Image galleries
editHi there,
Thanks for adding images to articles. However, there are some important things you should be aware of:
- Wikipedia isn't an image repository, so image galleries are usually inappropriate here.
- If you are mainly interested in creating galleries of images, you may want to contribute to Wikimedia Commons, a sister project to Wikipedia, which stores many free images.
For these reasons, I'll try to move some of your gallery images across to the Commons project over the next few days. Please get in touch with me if there are any questions about the policies. Thanks Papa November (talk) 14:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your quick reply. In response:
- There's no problem adding extra images to Wikipedia. However, the images should be used to accompany text in articles. They aren't supposed to just make the article look pretty.
- The main advantage of uploading images to Commons is that it is extremely widely used. If you want maximum exposure for your images, then it's a good place to put them. Millions of people all round the world view Commons images, and because they are freely licensed, people can use, and widely distributed the images, giving you credit as the author.
- Thanks, Papa November (talk) 16:00, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Good work, thanks a lot :) Papa November (talk) 17:53, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi
editHi Vinayak. Welcome to wikipedia. Nice to see you have signed up to contribute to the Karnataka wiki effort of which I have been a part of for about 3 years. Regarding the image galleries you had created, I was going to leave a note for you but looks like Papa November has taken the lead. Papa November is right, in that wiki articles are not meant to be image farms (I am guilty of a few similar errors myself). It was he who convinced me to start loading my images into commons and took the trouble to move nearly 100 images of mine from wikipedia to commons. I have contributed over 350 images now, mostly regarding Karnataka architecture, which is my hobby. Of these only about 100 are in commons, thanks to Papa November. I plan to move the rest in batches. Please use the category "Temples of Karnataka" in your commons image files so they all appear in one place. Happy contributions.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 20:40, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Galleries
editThanks for finding the galleries. The first thing to do when you find a gallery in an article is to write {{cleanup-gallery}} directly above the gallery. Here's an example The tag gives some advice, and also alerts other editors to the article, who will eventually help clean it up. Papa November (talk) 22:43, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Photo usage
editHi, I've been working on a small game built around animal quizzes and I wanted to let you know I've used one of your pictures.
I found your picture here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bandipur_2.jpg
And I attributed the picture like this: Vinayak wiki with this link: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Vinayak_wiki and also added a link to the license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en
I hope you're happy with it, please let me know if this is not the case. You can find the game here: http://apps.facebook.com/animalalbum Or through here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/AnimalAlbum/156339584490672
