Victor Săhleanu

edit

Hello, I wanted to inform you that someone notimated Victor Săhleanu for deletion. Perhaps you could contribute to the discussion so we can better evaluate whether he meets our inclusion standards or not? --ThaddeusB (talk) 15:52, 9 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the reply. I have changed to "keep", but do hope we can find some more sources. Please see my comment at the deletion discussion and reply if you can. --ThaddeusB (talk) 19:21, 10 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
To expand on what I said there, I see now someone (you?) wrote a 80 pages book on Săhleanu (În căutarea a ceea ce suntem. Concepţia antropologică a lui Victor Săhleanu) back in 1995. Assuming you wrote it or are at least familiar with it, can you tell me more about that? Is it biographical? semi-biographical? Was it published by a major publishing house or self-published? etc.
Regardless, how interested in translating some Romanian material (such as the book I found listed in the AfD) into English so that I can help you properly neutralize and reference the article? Automated translation does well enough to get the gist of content, but you really need a person to understand the nuiances of text. Let me know as I am very much interested in working with you on this, ThaddeusB (talk) 20:14, 10 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

ValentinSahleanu (talk) 22:53, 10 December 2014 (UTC)În căutarea a ceea ce suntem. Concepţia antropologică a lui Victor Săhleanu ("In search of what we are: The anthropological concepts of Victor Sahleanu")is a essay on his lifelong integrative anthropological approach, charting his very diverse scientific career. The book was written in collaboration and published under the sudonim Adrian Valentin in Bucharest. I will try to see if I can have some of the material translated into English. Unfortunately I cannot afford to have them translated professionally. In the meanwhile I will try to find some more links.Reply

I'll take that as a yes, you (partially) wrote it. Your grasp of English seems plenty good enough for me... Did you see the link I added to the AfD ([1]). That should definitely prove notability, IMO. That's enough to avoid deletion, but to actually integrate the source into the text is harder. For example, the first paragraph of the "Repere biografice" section machine translation is:
"Săhleanu Victor was born on January 19, 1924 in Gura Humor in Suceava. He attended high school in high school in Chernivtsi Aron fist. In 1942 he enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest, which he graduated in 1948. During college, is for a period of two years between 1944 and 1946, the time courses of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of Bucharest's, but abandoned . Doctor in Medicine and Surgery Devine in 1949, ostensibly thesis "Considerations on the field of medicine." Commission President is Prof. Dr. Stefan PhD Milcu and members are Prof. Dr. CI Parhon and Prof. Dr. Emil Christmas. Since the period is external medical student in Bucharest hospitals, assistant at the Department of Pathology, headed by prof. Dr. Emil Christmas (1946)."
As you can see, it is pretty rough. The first sentence is clear enough. I can guess the high school is really "Aron Pumnul din Cernăuţi" and that he attended college from 1942-48. But, the next sentence doesn't make any sense... and so on. (I can get more by cross-referencing your article, of course.) Would you be interested in personally translating some material like this? (I could just ask specific sentences that don't work in machine translation if that's preferable.) I don't need professional quality translation, just something better than the machine translation.
Also, if you could get me the text of În căutarea a ceea ce suntem (even in Romanian) via email that would also be helpful. --ThaddeusB (talk) 01:28, 11 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

You are right, the Google-translated paragraph does not make a lot of sense. But the whole section you included here is a short(er) biographical note (the title"Repere biografice"="Biographical markers"). I do not know what can it add to the bio page as is. I have sent a request to some of my friends back in Bucharest to get me as much material(even scans, PDFs, JPEGs) and web links as they are able to find. As for the book it was written with the aid of a long-time student of his. I could not help him, as I was already in the USA, where I arrived in 1985 as a political refugee. I will try to get the text anyway... Thanks for your effort in getting this thing right.ValentinSahleanu (talk) 02:27, 11 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Well, in that case maybe it is your Romanian, not your English tat you don't have confidence in... It isn't a question of adding to the article you wrote, but rather a question of adding references to it. I mean, I am sure what you wrote is accurate, but things are a lot better if we can point to source X that says the same thing so that an interested reader can verify the truthfulness themselves.
The sentence in question is "În timpul facultăţii, urmează pentru o perioadă de doi ani, între 1944 și 1946, cursurile fără frecvenţă ale Facultăţii de Litere și Filosofi e din București, dar abandonează." If I really dive deep into it, using multiple translators I can eventually get it (mostly) right. Perhaps: "While in college, for a period of two years from 1944 to 1946, he took part-time courses from the Faulty (Department) of Letters and Philosophers at Bucharest, but dropped out." This presumably corresponds to your "At the same time, he attended courses at the Faculty of Philosophy (1945–1946)." However, the process of figuring this out is very tedious (I've done it before for other articles in other languages). Having a human translator is much more efficient (and accurate). My hope would be that you could be that human translator to run things by, but if not I'll see if I can find someone else to help. Let me know, --ThaddeusB (talk) 03:26, 11 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

OK I get it now. I will translate for you the Bio part of that book so you may compare the data. I might able to find another source from a newspaper eulogy from 1997. I think my brother has a copy of that paper and I'll be able to scan it. I am swamped with work right now (I'm a self-employed designer), so I'll get to it as soon as possible.ValentinSahleanu (talk) 03:38, 11 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Great. Whenever you ave a chance to translate is fine by me. --ThaddeusB (talk) 03:46, 11 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
