File:USDA hardiness zones of Europe.svg

the new file is based on the same data as the other file, taken from a cleaner source with actually more detail retained. what exactly are you missing? city labels? Cartoffel (talk) 14:52, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

@Cartoffel My major concern is that this is not a one-to-one recreation of the other map. You claim that this one 'retains more detail' (I don't see how), but you seem to have omitted many details; especially in urban areas. For example, Milan is zone 9 in the original, it is 8 here. Same goes for many German cities, the urban heat islands (and heat islands otherwise) of which are ignored.
This leads to a second problem. If you chose to ignore/simplify some data and not others (i.e. it's not an exact recreation of the original), what is your standard for what data to use and not use? That borders on WP:OR. Uness232 (talk) 15:11, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
there's indeed some spots that got lost in the rather complex data merge from different source files. i'll see to that, should be half-way trivial to fix.--Cartoffel (talk) 15:23, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

and what about those sources? same source references apply. i linked all the sources i used, including the file you prefer. and the source given for that file is probably not the original source; others reference Roloff/Bärtels, Flora der Gehölze, © 1996, 2014, Eugen Ulmer KG, Stuttgart.--Cartoffel (talk) 15:03, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

You are right about sourcing; I checked quickly and thought you gave no sources. I am sorry for that mistake. The other problems I've brought up still apply, though. Uness232 (talk) 15:13, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

i hope i fixed everything. care to check again? (the data was mainly there, but invisible due to paths having wrong direction.) lake constance is a bit obscured by the state borders, though. maybe i'll make the borderlines cleaner and less obtrusive at some point...

do you find it acceptable now? do you have any other suggestions?--Cartoffel (talk) 16:10, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

@Cartoffel Hi, sorry for the late reply. The map does look much better now, thank you. I have one more small issue. The Appennines are shown as zone 7 with no zone 8 around it. I've looked at the original source, and I see zone 8 there. Must be a small mistake, but it is noticeable.
Looking past all of that, there are problems with the source map too (Turkey hurts to look at when compared to a national source, for example), but that is not your issue to fix, of course.
Thanks for your work, Uness232 (talk) 15:44, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
@Cartoffel Thank you for your timely fixes! I replaced the map on the page. Uness232 (talk) 16:35, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

One thing i did indeed (kind of) omit are the zone contour lines at sea. The data is in there, it's just not visible...

I really wanted to visualize this data based on a free map with dependable copyright status because i find the status of the other file rather dubious to say the least...--Cartoffel (talk) 16:48, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

@Cartoffel Leaving that data out is completely fair, as there's a clear criteria of what's being kept and not. It's probably good as well, considering how unlikely good data over the seas are. Uness232 (talk) 01:04, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
