Peerage articles

I am, unfortunately, not an admin. I would suggest reverting all the edits, then seeing if anyone can compare the account and the IPs; might be a quick way of getting them blocked as socks of each other (although technical evidence won't be able to link them to Max) if you have access to a willing CU. I wish I had a penny for every time I've said: "I know I have a knack for making myself misunderstood, but this time I thought I was clear." What's unclear here – how it is that I fail to see why h.a. and h.p. ought to be capitalized, or why I bothered making the above remark, or something else?

In many articles on peerages, after the lists of holders the names are given of the two or three persons currently next in line. The anonymous user(s) changed these in a particular style. I changed them for what I consider better English and better flow. Tryde then undid some of my changes and (i think) changed some others in a way consistent with the anonymous user(s)'s style. Hansard 1803-2005

Hi Tryde

First of all, I'm sorry for not getting back to you about the message you left on my talkpage at User talk:BrownHairedGirl#Peerage_articles. OI started trying to get my head around it, got distracted .... and forgot to come back to it. I hope it's under control now, but sorry for not even replying.

Anyway, the reason for this message is that I thought I should draw you attention to this edit of mine to John Manners-Sutton, 3rd Viscount Canterbury. I removed the sentence "He contributed occasionally in the House of Lords, speaking six times between 1873 and 1876", which you had added in this edit on 5 November 2009, and referenced to http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/people/mr-john-manners-sutton/1876 hansard.millbanksystems.com

A noted on that site's front page at http://hansard.millbanksystems.com, "The site is still undergoing development and experimentation, ... Work to improve the quality of the data is also ongoing." I have used that site a lot, and notice that it still has many indexing errors -- people listed under more than one name, people not included in constituency lists etc. For that reason, I don't think that the statistics produced by the site are reliable, although I see no reason to doubt that it has reproduced the text accurately, so I support its use as a reference for the content of speeches.

I do think that it's a very valuable site (and long overdue), so as you may have noticed I have been adding external links to it from articles on MPs, using the template {{hansard-contribs}} -- I'm trying to do them all, though with about 7,000 articles on Uk MPs, that will take some time! But I don't think that it is yet sufficiently robust for its indexes to be regarded as a reliable source.

You are probably correct. Anyway, I'm not going to be so active on Wikipedia in the future, as you can see on my user page I'm semi-retired since the New Year. Unfortunately my quiet semi-retirement has now been interrupted by the mass-edits made to peerage articles by a number of anonymous IP-addresses... Tryde (talk) 10:46, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

British governments

I was recently looking over List of British governments and trying to sort out what to do with the Conservatives from 1979 to 1997. I originally created Conservative Government 1979-1997 for that, which is probably too big. However, I'm inclined to think your articles covering the same period are divided a bit too fine; that is, you seem to have created a new article after every general election (and Thatcher's resignation), but if you look at other precedents in the list, prime ministers who survived several general elections have all of their governments combined into one article. Would you be OK with a merger of the articles into Conservative Government 1979-1990 and Conservative Government 1990-1997? Choess (talk) 03:03, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

Checkuser; it compares the IP of an account with IPs used by other accounts to draw out sockpuppets. I've had a rangeblock put on the IPs, so it blocks every IP ending in (certain prefix), which is helpful to prevent him simply resetting his router and carrying on.
