English variety changes edit

Hello, thanks for your copyedit of the Arno article. However, please don't change words from one variety of English to another without first checking whether this is appropriate per the relevant guideline. Thanks. Graham87 01:54, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Same goes for Illuminati. Not sure about the de-hyphenation either, nor is my spell-checker. Fiddlersmouth (talk) 01:11, 1 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

IPA edit

Please stop messing around with IPA transcriptions; this activity borders on vandalism. Why did you remove the template from Xenophon? Why don't you ever use the IPAc-en template? Why do you employ [æ] (Abdera, Thrace) and [ʌ] (Tegea), instead of the schwa? You also confused [æ] with [e] (Theano) and [ɪr] with [ir] (Abdera, Thrace). These mistakes are elementary and clearly show that you have no idea what you are doing. --Omnipaedista (talk) 20:56, 19 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Kagu edit

On the genus ‘’Rhynochetos’’: 1) that Verreaux & DesMurs may have confused Gk. ‘’rhynchos’’ (‘’rhunkhos’’, ῥύγχος), beak, with ‘’rhin-’’ (ῥίς, ῥινός), nose, and 2) that ‘’chetos’’ is from ‘’khaitē’’, χαίτη, crest or mane; cf. spirochete, coiled hair. No such Gk. word as ‘’chetos’’ or ‘’khetos’’ (χητος, χαιτος, χοιτος, χετος), meaning corn, callus, or grain.

On the species ‘’jubatus’’: 1) It does mean maned or crested, but 2) L. ‘’jubatus’’ derives from ‘’juba’’, mane or crest, and not from nonexistent ‘’jabatus’’ [sic].

Alcmaeonids edit

My twice-corrected stress on the phonemic transcription /ˌælkmiːˈoʊnɪdz/ to /ˌælkˈmiːoʊnɪdz/ has twice been reverted. I am certain that it’s “Alc-mae´o-nids,” or “Alc´mae-o-nids,” not “Alc-mae-o´nids.” This follows the standard Anglicization of Latinized classical Greek names, and I cited a source, https://quatr.us/greeks/the-curse-of-the-alcmaeonids.htm. Baffled edit

I'm baffled by what you thought you were doing in this edit. I'm assuming it wasn't just vandalism. Peter coxhead (talk) 22:53, 19 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ok, thanks for the e-mail. I've made the edit you were rightly trying to make. It looks as if some kind of "autocorrection" of single quotes was turned on in whatever editor you were using, so that it changed all occurrences of '' to double curly quotes.
